Semiaquatic freshwater turtles can survive in arid savannas by hiding underground during many years of drought, waiting for the next rainfall. How can they do this? What is the genomic backbone of adaptation to this extreme habitat? In collaboration with Dr. Melita Vamberger, we now started a genome assembly project to generate the genomic resource for deeper research on the mechanism of drought adaptation.
